The resolution of Quad HD is 2560 × 1440.

Some of the other popular resolutions in displays are:

  • HD — 1280 × 720
  • Full HD — 1920 × 1080
  • QFHD or Ultra HD — 3840 × 2160

If we have a close look on these we can notice that Quad HD is 4 times the resolution of HD and Ultra HD is 4 times of Full HD.

Quad HD = 4 × HD = 1280(2) × 720(2)

Ultra HD = 4 × Full HD = 1920(2) × 1080(2)

If you don’t know, now you have a bit of technical knowledge about these. Coming to your question:

Do we see the cell phone screens really at Quad HD?

Yes, we see the smartphones screens at whatever the resolution they offer as they are physical not virtual.

Generally more is good i.e. higher the resolution greater the experience.

But till what extent?

  1. Higher resolution displays carry more pixels for a clear and sharper images but it makes more sense when we see the pixel densities of these displays.

Smartphones launched these days have pixel densities over 400ppi and most flagships have over 500ppi but our eyes cannot pick the individual pixels when they are closely packed (i.e. more density — more pixels per inch).

If a display has a pixel density over 300ppi then the pixels are not imperceptible to the human eye. So displays with higher resolutions are great but it cuts down till the extent we can see them.

Most flagships smartphone’s display has density over 500ppi, they are nice and elegant compared to standard displays but we cannot experience the same what they offer numerically — number of pixels.

2. Another problem that I noticed is that the displays simply doesn’t have enough pixels, which is some way related to our viewing experience.

What? Enough pixels?

Yes, to support this let’s play around with numbers.

Let’s take a Full HD display, it got a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, then the total number of pixels display has is 1920 × 1080 = 20,73,600‬. Now, a decent camera with 12MP resolution which produces an image with 1,20,00,000‬ pixels.

It is clear that a Full HD display doesn’t carry the quantity of pixels needed to show all the details of a 12MP camera.

Now take a Ultra HD — 3840 × 2160 then the total number of pixels equals to 3840 × 2160 = 82,94,400‬. Even this display…………I think you got it which constitutes to the fact that our viewing experience is limited.

So, yes we see the display as it is but our experience is limited by our eye sensitivity.
