It will be a turning point only if they want to turn.

What was ‘Make in India’ campaign? To start manufacturing here, right?

Then, did they do that? No. If Indian smartphone companies started manufacturing here then at least the prices of their smartphones would have been lower, then maybe the sales would be more in their price range.

To say the least Indian smartphone manufacturers weren’t even assembling the smartphones in India whereas other manufacturers (Chinese and Non-Chinese) started assembling smartphones here to cut down the import duties and taking advantage of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) to cut down the usual tax to 1% by starting manufacturing units in SEZ.

Isn’t it a turning point? They could have saved a lot of money just like other players did. In the present, there are only few (2) smartphones which are ‘Made (Assembled) in India’ by the Indian smartphone companies.

Can the Aatma-nirbhar Bharat campaign be a turning point for Indian smartphone makers?

First, What is Aatma-nirbhar Bharat campaign?

It is a campaign started by our PM to make our country Self-reliant. To be clear, it is a campaign to stop depending on other countries.

As said, Most of the Indian smartphone brands didn’t even start assembling. Now if they want to start assembling here, they have to import the parts from China because they don’t have manufacturing plants. Then the smartphone is assembled here and later sold here which increases their revenue by creating some jobs here.

Yes, Aatma-nirbhar Bharat campaign can be a turning point for Indian smartphone manufacturers but still they have to rely on Chinese manufacturers which clearly is not the idea of the initiative.

If they start manufacturing smartphone parts here then that will be great because it creates a lot jobs and we may even start exporting electronics (which we are aiming for) and that truly comes under the campaign which helps our economy too.

Recently Micromax announced that they are launching 3 smartphones in India but it is not clear if they are ‘Made in India’ smartphones or not. I wish these smartphones will be impressive but their previous track record never reached up to the hype.
