Why Intel didn’t buy ARM?

Even I had the same doubt -

Because in the future ARM may overtake Intel’s business but before they had no relationship or any rivalry because both companies are not competing with each other.

Intel manufactures processors for Desktops, PC’s and servers whereas ARM designs processors for smartphones. So there is no reason for Intel to buy stake in ARM because they have their own manufacturing units and Intel is still leading the market.

That was 4–5 years ago. Now AMD is far ahead compared to Intel by launching first Octa core CPU for PC’s and processors using 7nm manufacturing process. This is a huge step for AMD where Intel is stuck at 14nm process.

But the real threat for Intel is ARM because both Intel and AMD use X86 based processors, which are based on CISC architecture but ARM uses RISC based processors.

There are some advantages for RISC based processors over CISC -

  1. Heat dissipation — Heat generated by RISC based processors is very less compared to CISC.
  2. Power consumption — As the heat generated is less, power wastage is less, which results in less power usage.

Due to these major advantages most OEM’s turning their heads towards ARM.

  1. Amazon started using ARM processors in their servers.
  2. Recently Fugaku beats summit and become the world’s most powerful supercomputer. This supercomputer uses ARM architecture.
  3. Recently Apple announced that they’ll be using their own CPU’s in Macbooks which is based on ARM architecture.

Now it is clear that the future is uncertain for Intel.

By seeing these I had the same doubt -

Why Intel didn’t buy ARM?

Even I had no idea why Intel didn’t buy ARM but this is what I found on my research. Companies like Google, Samsung, Nvidia, MediaTek, Apple, Qualcomm, etc. have enough cash to buy ARM but regulators would stop them from happening.

I think this is the same case with Intel.

But recently I saw Nvidia is interested to buy ARM from Softbank. So, if Intel somehow manages to buy ARM then their business will not plummet.
