Why Samsung and Apple are removing charger and cables from smartphone box?

Apple may stop providing charging brick and earphones in the smartphone box from their next smartphone launch which maybe held in October or November. That’s what the rumors say.

Another fresh rumors says that Samsung is also going to ditch the components in the box starting from smartphones releasing next year.

Charging brick, earphones and smartphone cables are some basic accessories that are provided by smartphone OEM’s right from the start.

The reasons for this odd move are:

  1. E-waste: Some sources say that Apple is trying to reduce the electronic waste by these accessories because almost everyone these days own a smartphone so probably they don’t need another charger.
  2. Actually this makes sense when we look at the data. In 2014, 60% of the E-waste is dumped into the landfills and 40% is recycled. In 2016, 44.7 million tons of E-waste is produced which is equivalent to building to 4500 Eiffel towers. This data would be much higher by this year.
  3. By not shipping this they would be doing a greater good to the environment or that’s what they claim. Though this is not the 1st instance for Apple to think about Environment but there is another reason behind the scenes.
  4. Everyone has a thought that Apple is trying to save money and make even more profits. If Apple doesn’t manufacture these accessories then they would save around 5–15$ per each unit. That’s not a huge profit margin, right?
  5. Yes, that is a fraction of what they earn on a single unit but on the whole i.e. taking account by the amount of volume sold that money saved will be huge, as expected. Apple ships more 200 million smartphones in a single year. Multiplying 200 million with even 5$ is a big number.

Samsung’s move towards this is expected. There is a reason why Apple is a popular smartphone brand (other than cost) because they are trend setter.

Apple introduced fingerprint sensors and the rest followed it.

Apple ditched the headphone jack and the rest followed it.

Apple started using dual cameras and the rest followed it.

Then. ear pods, notch, facial recognition system and so on and the rest?

Apple has a good reason to do this but the underlying fact is money. If they want to save the environment but with losing some money then would they do that?

I wonder if all the manufactures start doing this.
